Question by Danielle: If I’m going to give my dog diet food, can I just give it to her or should I go to the vet first?
I’m planning on giving my dog diet food, she’s a 5 year old Siberian Husky and she’s very round. I want to give her diet food but I’m not sure if I should go to the vet and get a recommendation or just get a bag of food myself at Petco. Is it better to visit the vet or is it safe to do it yourself?

Just call your vet. Ask him about the food you saw at Petco!
Give your answer to this question below!

When was the last time she saw the vet? Did the vet tell you she needed to lose weight then?
With our dogs we have a target weight, and we increase the food or decreas it depending on how close they are.
you should always check with your vet when changing your dog’s diet like that. it might look as though she is sort of fat, but she might be sick.
You do not need to visit the vet.
If you haven’t had a veterinary visit recently, I would suggest that you schedule a check-up to compare your Husky’s current weight with her previous weight. Your dog may have a thyroid problem, which would require medication. If she needs to lose a few pounds, you can purchase a prescription weight loss food from the veterinarian, typically Science Diet r/d. This food is more expensive than foods available at Petco, but after comparing the ingredients, you’ll find that they’re mostly the same. Most weight loss foods list a grain based ingredient first, as opposed to a meat based ingredient, in order to save calories, but you may find that simply feeding less of the normal diet will also lead to weight loss. You can look to the back of the bag to see a basic feeding guideline, but often times the listed amount is too much. Depending on how much food you are currently feeding your Husky, you may need to just cut back some. And of course, be careful with the treats!
Have you ever considered Raw Feeding? It’s a great way to control weight and give her just what it needs.
