Foods That Rabbits Can Eat

So what can a pet rabbit eat? What types of foods are safe for a rabbit? Here is some handy food tips for those who own rabbits. It is relatively easy on knowing what are the right foods for a rabbit and what aren’t. One thing to keep in mind is that rabbits have a consistent diet. If they eat something that is not in their diet and it is introduced too abruptly to them then it can cause health problems for the rabbit.

A lot of websites and handy guides vary on what kinds of foods hat a rabbit can eat to stay healthy. All of them do say that rabbits need fresh hay and water all the time for them to stay healthy. There are a few different types of hay (alfalfa, timothy, and oat). The most important one out of those three is timothy hay (aka grass hay). The other ones are decent, but not as a main source of food for the rabbit. So timothy hay will be the main source of diet for the rabbit. They need this hay to keep their digestive system in balance. Without hay, the rabbits can have long term damaging effects in their digestive system causing them to be sick.

Pellets are a good secondary source of food for them. There will be many different assortments of pellets. Pellets only, pellets with seeds, and pellets with treats. You should probably just buy the bag that is pellets only and make sure you look at the label and identify if the pellets are high in fiber (16% or higher). If you do want to buy the bags that have pellets and other assorted foods (seeds, treats, etc.) you still can, but keep in mind these foods are unhealthy given in large amounts. So if you do give them to your rabbits use it sparingly. Never have this as your main source of food for rabbits.

A healthier source of food than pellets are vegetables and fruits. Vegetable is healthy for the bunny and so are fruits. But fruits should be given in moderation, because of sugar content. Only give the vegetables and fruits to rabbits after they are six months old. Introduce the foods very slowly. A little bit at a time. And try to introduce only one fruit or vegetable at a time so their digestive system can adjust. You can upset the rabbit’s digestive system if you give them different kinds of foods too fast. This will make them ill and they will have diarrhea and other assorted problems. You and rabbit will not be in a very happy mood. Remember this is a secondary source of food. Moderation is key. Getting a flat belly is not the hardest thing in the world. A lot of people make a big deal about getting a flat belly for many reasons. Some of these reasons are more justified than others. A lot of times, people who embark on a weight loss program are either mis informed  about what they are doing or they do not have a solid, scientific plan that has been proven to work over and over again. Well don’t worry, because what I am about to show you is the exact plan that I give a lot of my clients when they come to me to lose their belly. Without further ado, here is the diet plan.

First thing is you need to have protein in every meal you consume. There are many reasons for this but the main ones are because protein is very filling, it helps repair muscle damage, and increase your metabolism. By staying full, you will be less likely to binge and give into cravings. Protein is also 30% more thermogenic than carbs or fats. What this means is that when you ingest any form of protein, your body has a harder time breaking it down, especially if it’s solid food. Therefore, your body has to use energy in the form of calories to digest protein into simpler forms.

The next thing is you need to eat multiple times a day. If you don’t, you lead to an increase in fat storage. By eating small meals throughout the day, you are essentially stoking the fire, and the fire is your metabolism. Shoot for 5 to 6 meals a day. Have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In between breakfast and lunch have a light snack and another snack between lunch and dinner.

Consume all of your carbs in the form of fruit and veggies. This one is pretty straight forward. Unless you are an athlete, you will not need a lot of carbs especially if you have a high percentage of body fat. The higher the number, the less carbs you need because you are insulin resistant. By only getting your carbs from fruit and veggies ensures that you are getting enough nutrients from healthy sources.

Also, the last half of the day, you should only consume a mixture of protein and healthy fats with veggies, no carbs at all. As the day goes on, there is a higher chance of the carbs you ingest being stored as body fat. You are more insulin sensitive in the morning as compared to at night. A perfect dinner would be any type of lean protein with a ton of veggies doused in olive oil.

Consume healthy fats. Fat is not bad for you. The only real type of fat that you do not need in your diet is trans fat. This is really unhealthy and has been linked to cancer, heart disease and a host of other disorders. Consume omega 3 fatty acids daily. Good sources are salmon, herring, mackerel, and flax seeds. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation, which is great for your cardiovascular health. They also have been shown to aid in weight loss.

If you just follow these tips and tricks that I have outlined above, you will lose weight. That I can guarantee you. However, this is a matter up to you if you are willing to put forth the effort.

Heart Healthy Holiday Foods

Happy Holidays!  Happy Heart Health?  Yes, thankfully both are possible.  Just think about what Americans usually eat for the holidays … and the average holiday meal can easily exceed 2,000 fat-laden calories.  But rather than focusing on what NOT to eat, (and feeling guilty) read on and learn about delicious foods and healthy ways to enjoy them…. foods that may already be on your shoppng list this year.

 

Let’s begin with pumpkins—beautiful on the outside and delicious on the inside too.  Loaded with vitamin A and teeming with fiber, pumpkin offers more than a seasonal decoration.  Low in calories and rich with the healthiest types of fat, enjoy pumpkin pie this year, but tailor it to fit in with a tasty, healthy lifestyle.  Instead of a pie made with eggs, sugar, evaporated milk, and a waist-expanding high-fat pie crust, consider using an egg substitute, light cream (or low-fat evaporated milk, or soy milk) in your recipe.  Avoid transfat in your pie crust, or make your own without shortening.  And don’t forget about natural sugar substitutes like stevia, honey, brown rice syrup or agave syrup.

 

Next on the list is cranberries, rich with vitamin C, naturally low in calories, coupled with dietary fiber and manganese.  Cranberries offer an abundance of proanthocyanidins, the type of antioxidant that helps keep bacteria from adhering to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract.  Skip the canned cranberry sauce and easily whip up a batch of your own.  Simply simmer fresh cranberries with a little orange juice and zest, sweeten with a natural sweetener, and top with mandarin oranges and chopped walnuts.  You can have seconds of this, and thirds too!

 

What about the simple sweet potato?  Often ignored until the holidays, when grandma baked a casserole laden with tons of brown sugar and marshmallows.  Yuk!  Sweet potato is a root veggie, and a rich source of antioxidants such as vitamin C and beta-carotene.  Loaded with potassium like the banana, but with a delicious, edible skin that provides the health benefits of fiber, making the sweet potato a healthy holiday food.  Try something different this year and cut them into wedges and roast them drizzled with olive oil and rosemary or your favorite fresh herbs.  Sweet potatoes are also delicious mashed with buttermilk, added to a harvest squash soup, or baked and served simply like a baked white potato.

 

What about good old-fashioned green beans?  While they may be one of the healthiest holiday foods out there, (and an excellent source of manganese, vitamins A, C, K, fiber, folate, iron and potassium), the traditional green bean casserole is high in calories and sodium.  Save this delicious dish by making a lower-fat version with fat-free cream of mushroom soup and a heart-healthy butter substitute.  For extra healthy flavor, cook some onions in olive oil first, add fresh mushrooms, and mix this into the recipe.

 

And finally, the turkey.  This beloved bird is an excellent source of protein, and provides the least amount of fat per serving, compared to other meats, if you pass on the skin.  And while you’re passing, try passing on the ham this year.  Ham is loaded with fat and is high in sodium, so make it easier to pass on this holiday season by not serving it at all. 

 

Remember during the holidays to think smart:  Start out your day with a healthy breakfast like oatmeal, yoghurt and fresh fruit—that way you’re not famished when you arrive at the party.  Eat plenty of fresh veggies, with a low-cal dip on the side.  If you partake at the party, drink a healthy glass of wine, even a wine spritzer to make the beverage last longer, top it off with fresh citrus for added taste and flair.  Feel confident with fresh breath at a party by brushing your teeth and flossing often—remember, dental plaque has been linked with cardiovascular disease, so keep ’em clean!  Eat smaller portions, and don’t buy into the holiday guilt trip that can drag you down in spirit.
