The 3 Day Cardiac Diet was supposedly developed by the Birmingham Hospital in Alabama, though the hospital does not admit its role in the origin of the plan. The 3 day cardiac diet has also been attributed to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

The story is that the 3 Day Cardiac Diet was designed for patients who needed to lose up to 10 lbs weight quickly so they could have surgery.

The 3 Day Cardiac Diet has set menu plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner for three days. Each day is limited to about 800 calories. While some claim that there is a special chemical reaction, much of the weight loss benefit is likely obtained by the restricted calorie intake. Also, there are very few carbs on the diet which leads to water loss.

You should drink six to eight cups of water a day on the program to speed digestion.

Tuna is the featured protein on the 3 day Cardiac diet. 1/2 cup of tuna is prescribed on the first two days, and on the final day, you will increase that to 1 cup. Variety and nutrition is provided with small to medium sized portions of cheese, eggs, crackers, vegetables, grapefruit, banana, and toast. Coffee, tea, or diet soda can accompany meals but water should be the beverage of choice outside of mealtime.

Some nutritionists express concerns about the restricted levels of calories and lack of a full range of nutritional options. However, considering that the diet lasts only 3 days, these are not dispositive.

People following the 3 day cardiac diet will likely feel hunger pangs and have lower energy levels. This is especially true by the third day. But, keep in mind that the diet is of limited duration and you should be fine unless you have endurance based physical feats to perform.

Your body may start to recognize that only a limited food supply is available when you eat only 3 small meals a day. It may begin to compensate by reducing metabolism and energy levels to conserve fat reserves. This can actually make it harder to lose weight and place the body under additional stress.

The 3 Day Cardiac diet is not suitable for long term dieting. After 3 days you should start on a diet that offers more variety and more calories.

Living Foods – Add Life Force to Your Diet For Better Health

What is a Living Food? (No, I’m not talking about what you find at the back of the refrigerator!) The simplest definition is that it has a high vibrational quality. If we were able to measure the potential energy (on a subtle level) of a Living Food, it would be full of life-force energy ready to be easily absorbed by the consumer.

Over ten years ago, I was introduced to the concept of Living Books through the work of Charlotte Mason, an early 20th century British educator. Her philosophies completely changed my approach to homeschooling and how I used books. I have discovered many parallels between feeding our minds on Living Books and feeding our bodies with a healthy diet of Living Foods.

Mason defined a Living Book as a “whole” book that feeds the spirit on many levels. Much of classic literature fits this category as well as books of scripture from all traditions. The hallmark of a Living Book is that it can be read again and again and there is always something more to be gained or learned.

Mason termed books that are a waste of time, that do not feed the soul, as “twaddle.” Kind of like a junk-food version of books. Also, few textbooks can pass as Living Books because they are often stripped of their story, leaving just selected points that are recognized as being important.

Living Foods, like Living Books, are whole. Whole foods have not been stripped of their nutrition through excessive processing or by separating out selected parts and discarding the rest. Just as Living Books have not been stripped of their humanity-their story-and aren’t abridged or dumbed down. All of the parts of the whole work together synergystically to create something greater.

Living Foods are pleasing to the palate, nose, eyes and even to the ears (think of the sizzle of stir frying vegetables or steaks on a grill). If you don’t enjoy eating it, you don’t absorb the nutritional value of the food well. Living Foods are not “twaddle” or junk. Junk foods are usually created just to be appealing and don’t have any real nutritional value. Junk foods are often subjected to intense industrial processing that destroys most of the nutritients. These usually come in a flashy box or bag and are heavily advertised. You know what they are.

In some cases, Living Foods are literally alive. They contain probiotics (beneficial “live and active” bacteria) that promote a healthy digestive system. Also, we refer to enzymes in foods as being “live” although they are actually just specialized protein molecules. Enzymes are destroyed or “killed” in foods that have been heated to high temperatures.

Culturing or fermenting foods increases the probiotic, vitamin and enzyme levels and decreases the levels of antinutrients, such as phytic acid and enzyme-inhibitors making the nutrients more readily absorbed. Examples of this include yogurt, kefir, some cheeses, traditional sauerkraut and pickles, and sourdough breads.

Unlike the words from books, which can last indefinitely, most foods will deteriorate and lose vital energy over time. Fermentation (where another living organism is added to the food to culture it) can greatly prolong and enhance the life-force energy of the food. For example, naturally made (lactofermented) sauerkraut contains 50% more vitamin C than raw cabbage!

In a Living Book, the energy of the writer is carried through to the reader in the written words. Living Foods have been created or prepared with love and purpose. They are infused with the energy of their creator (and the energy of the earth and its Creator). Think about this when you buy your food.

It’s impossible not to walk through these areas without being impressed by the wide variety of fruits and vegetables, sights and smells.  You’re “limited” to hundreds of options.  And this is without ever getting into the area of meat and nuts, which you are also totally allowed to eat.

Best of all, the bright colors and textures are signs of disease-fighting aspects.  Dark-greens are excellent sources of calcium but they also help fight off cancer, as do Brazil nuts and almost any other natural food.  You can’t get this kind of goodness from meal bars!

It’s Good For The Environment Too!

This doesn’t necessarily mean that if you continue to subsist on cheeseburgers and yo-yo diets that you’re going to get cancer or have a heart-attack–but neither one is good for you. 

Nor do you actually have to give up the occasional burger – you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how good grass-fed, hormone free beef on sprouted grain bread tastes, and how much better you feel after eating than what you may be used to.

Not to mention that there are increasing studies on the issue of what the hormones, antibiotics and pesticides in and on our foods are doing to our bodies and the world around us. 

Being “green” isn’t all tree-hugging and wearing hemp.  When it comes to food, it’s about enlightened self-interest and trying to keep from consuming any more strange chemicals than we absolutely have to.

The Joys Of Cooking

What scares many of us, even those of us aware of the health and fat-burning properties away from the produce section, isn’t even that we don’t like vegetables, but that we don’t know how to prepare them without killing their health properties and flavor. 

This is why any weight loss plan that’s going to help you eat the right foods, in the right proportions so that you aren’t hungry, but do burn fat and lose that ten percent of body weight and more, will come with something else.

It’s a shame that with all the varieties of food that exist that it’s hard to think of ways to prepare them properly.  A recipe book with more ideas than you can shake a stick at will help you get started in the right direction. 

But the thing is, once you start becoming aware of all the possibilities out there, you won’t just get fitter and healthier. You’re likely to get more creative in the kitchen too, and there’s telling what amazing places that can take you to.
